The Meaning of YogaSan

"YogaSan" may be divided in different ways : Yoga-san in the Japanese way, Yog Asan meaning a yoga pose, or YogaSAN from the latin root “SANus” or “SANitas” meaning healthy or sane.

YogaSan Style

YogaSan trains students for perfect Classical Hatha Yoga Asana and Pranayam.  Our sources are :

Classical Hatha Yoga

We teach classical poses as described by Swami Satyananda Saraswati (26 July 1923 - 5 December 2009); he created the Bihar School of Yoga and was a disciple of Swami Sivananda Saraswati (below). A great teacher who achieved full realization. An expert in tantra, mantra, yantra, and also kriya yoga.

Main Texts  : Asana, Pranayama, Mudra Bandha by Sw. Satyananda Saraswati.

Sivananda Yoga

A sequence of twelve classical poses helpful for flexibility and flow. This sequence was developed for Westerners by Swami Vishnu Devananda, at the behest of his guru, Swami Sivananda Saraswati (8 September 1887- 14 July 1963). Swami Sivananda was a very great teacher who achieved full realization. He was an expert in the four yogas (karma, bhakti, jnana, raja) and in tantra, mantra, yantra, as well as kriya yoga and ayurveda (Traditional Indian Medicine).

Main Texts : The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga by Sw. Vishnu Devananda.  Sw. Sivananda himself was a prolific writer responsible for hundreds of publications including books on asana.

Iyengar Yoga

We teach Iyengar standing poses to improve strength and stamina. These poses were developed by B.K.S Iyengar (born 14 December 1918), this style is very precise in its "scientific" or technical approach to asana and pranayama.  It employs the use of props such as belts, bolsters and wooden implements.   We use a wide range of props at YogaSan.  See the Equipment page for some photos of our custom-made ECO props and Suria yoga equipment.

Main Texts : Light on Yoga, Light on Pranayama
